About Azodyl (Renal Probiotic Blend)
Drug Class
Veterinary Probiotic Supplement — Enteric Urease Inhibitor
Mechanism of Action
Azodyl contains live bacteria (Kibow Biotics blend: Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum) that metabolise urea and other nitrogenous waste products in the gut. This ‘enteric dialysis’ pathway provides an alternative route for nitrogen excretion, potentially reducing circulating uraemic toxins.
Primary Uses in Dogs
Supportive management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in dogs and cats, particularly to reduce blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and improve quality of life in azotaemic patients. Used as an adjunct to dietary management, not as a replacement for medical treatment.
Dosing Quick Reference
| Indication | Dose | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| CKD supportive care | 1 capsule | q8–12h PO whole (do not crush) |
| Small dogs (< 7 kg) | 1 capsule | q12h PO |
| Larger dogs (> 7 kg) | 1 capsule | q8h PO |
Common Side Effects
- Generally very well tolerated
- Occasional mild GI upset (soft stools) during initiation
- Bloating in sensitive dogs
- Rare allergic reactions
Monitoring
BUN, creatinine, phosphorus every 3 months as part of CKD monitoring protocol. Azodyl effects on BUN are modest — realistic expectation is 5–15% reduction.
What Is Azodyl?
Azodyl is a proprietary blend of beneficial bacteria — Kibow Biotics — containing Streptococcus thermophilus KB19, Lactobacillus acidophilus KB27, and Bifidobacterium longum KB31. These organisms colonise the lower GI tract and metabolise nitrogenous waste products (urea, creatinine, uric acid) that diffuse from the bloodstream into the colon, converting them into bacterial biomass that is excreted in faeces rather than re-absorbed.
This process — termed enteric dialysis — reduces the systemic load of uraemic toxins, potentially alleviating clinical signs of chronic kidney disease (CKD) such as nausea, lethargy, and reduced appetite. Azodyl is used as adjunctive therapy alongside dietary protein restriction and phosphorus management in dogs with CKD stages 2–4.
Important Administration Rules
- Do NOT open capsules — the enteric coating protects bacteria from gastric acid
- Do NOT crush or mix with hot food — destroys live organisms
- Give on an empty stomach or with a small amount of cool food
- Store in refrigerator (2–8°C) — do not freeze
- Each capsule contains 75 mg of lyophilised bacterial blend (≥400 million CFU/g)

Clinical Evidence
Several small studies have evaluated Azodyl in dogs and cats with CKD. While results are mixed, some dogs show improvement in clinical wellbeing scores and modest reductions in BUN. Azodyl is not a replacement for dietary management or conventional CKD treatment but is widely used as a safe, low-risk adjunct.
- Always combine with phosphorus restriction and controlled protein diet
- Monitor BUN, creatinine, phosphorus, and SDMA every 3 months in CKD patients
- Assess clinical response after 4–6 weeks of consistent use
