⚕️ Corticosteroids have significant side effects with long-term use including PU/PD, weight gain, muscle wasting, and increased infection risk. This calculator is for informational reference only. All steroid treatment should be prescribed and monitored by a veterinarian.

Prednisone and prednisolone are corticosteroids used in dogs to treat allergic reactions, immune-mediated diseases (IMHA, ITP, IBD), Addison's disease, inflammatory conditions, and certain cancers. Prednisolone is preferred in dogs as dogs convert prednisone to prednisolone less efficiently than humans. The dose varies widely depending on the indication.

Dosage by Indication

Anti-inflammatory (allergies, mild inflammation): 0.5–1 mg/kg once daily. Immunosuppressive (IMHA, ITP, immune-mediated disease): 2–4 mg/kg once daily. Physiological replacement (Addison's disease): 0.1–0.2 mg/kg once daily. Lymphoma / CNS disease: as directed by oncologist (often 2 mg/kg/day). All doses should be tapered gradually once disease is controlled.

Tapering Protocol

Corticosteroids must never be stopped abruptly. A typical taper reduces the dose by 25–50% every 1–2 weeks, ultimately transitioning to alternate-day dosing before discontinuation. Abrupt withdrawal can cause an Addisonian-like crisis. The taper rate depends on how long the dog has been on steroids.

Available Tablet Sizes

Available as 1 mg, 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, and 50 mg tablets. Prednisolone tablets (preferred for dogs) are available in the same sizes. A liquid suspension (1 mg/ml or 5 mg/ml) is available for small dogs or precise dosing adjustments during tapering.

How to calculate the prednisone dosage for dogs

To calculate the correct prednisone dosage for your dog, follow these steps:

  1. Weigh Your Dog: Determine your dog’s weight in kilograms (kg). If you have the weight in pounds (lbs), you can convert it to kilograms by dividing by 2.2 (1 kg = 2.2 lbs).
  2. Determine the Dosage Range: The typical dosage range for prednisone in dogs is between 0.5 to 2 mg per kilogram of body weight, depending on the condition being treated.
  3. Calculate the Dosage:
    • Mild Conditions (e.g., allergies): Use the lower end of the range (0.5 mg/kg).
    • Moderate Conditions (e.g., inflammation): Use the middle of the range (1 mg/kg).
    • Severe Conditions (e.g., autoimmune diseases): Use the higher end of the range (2 mg/kg).
  4. Example Calculation:
    • If your dog weighs 20 kg and has a moderate condition:
      • Dosage = 20 kg * 1 mg/kg = 20 mg per day.
  5. Consult Your Veterinarian: Always consult your veterinarian to confirm the dosage and ensure it is appropriate for your dog’s specific condition and health status.

Important Considerations

  • Tapering: Prednisone is often given in a tapering dose, starting with a higher dose and gradually decreasing it to prevent withdrawal symptoms.
  • Monitoring: Watch for any side effects such as increased thirst, urination, appetite, or gastrointestinal issues, and report them to your vet.
